Tongues in the Garden
Emma Ladji
In a chestnut forest in Italy, Eustace, a British tourist, is having a picnic. In an untended theater in Brooklyn, Emma, an actress, is portraying all of the characters in a play about Eustace. When Eustace inexplicably becomes possessed by the Greek God Pan, Emma’s performance is hijacked by other beings as well.

Tongues in the Garden is a possessed adaptation of E.M Forster’s 1904 novella, The Story of a Panic, featuring the audio recorded musings of Tuscan Master Gardner “Gigi,” original music written and composed by Emma Ladji in Italy, and plant biodata converted into live sound. Loosely inspired by Pier Paolo Pasolini films and Romeo Castellucci's performance piece, “Attore, il tuo nome non è esatto,” Tongues in the Garden invokes the Arcadia we can’t have and the mystic forces that surround us and may even govern us.
